The average speed a dirt bike can achieve is between 50 and 60 miles per hour. These numbers will ultimately depend on a combination of factors including the type of engine, horsepower and the terrain being ridden. Although dirt bikes aren’t designed primarily for speed, they are fast and fun to ride!

What Makes Dirt Bikes Different

Also known as off-road motorcycles or motocross bikes, dirt bikes are built specifically for off-road tracks and events. Designed to be ridden on rough surfaces like sand, gravel, mud or even snow these vehicles have a high ground clearance that prevents them from getting stuck in various terrain and tough, narrow knobby tires.

Dirt bikes also have rugged construction with exposed engines and little bodywork to prevent unnecessary damage to it and are much lighter than standard road-going motorcycles. Usually a dirt bike has a two-stroke or a four-stroke engine that varies by their horsepower ranging from 50cc – 800cc.

Built to absorb major shock on jumps and rough terrain, dirt bikes feature an advanced suspension system with hydraulic and spring shocks. This style of bike is unlike motorbikes that are built for speed and can travel long distances without refueling, although that doesn’t mean that a dirt bike cannot go fast.

How Fast is a Dirt Bike?

Adult dirt bikes are typically in the 230cc to 450cc range while younger adults or children might ride anything from 50cc to 150cc. The greater the cubic capacity (cc) the faster the bike, but the heavier the load, the slower the bike performs. Here are some average speeds for 50-450 cc bikes.

  • 50cc dirt bikes can drive between 25-40 mph and are relatively easy to control and manage which makes it ideal for kids
  • 65cc is the novice range of small and lightweight bike models that can hit a maximum speed of 62 mph
  • 80cc dirt bike models can reach speeds of 45-55 miles per hour; there are also varieties with different engines that can surpass 55 mph
  • 100cc bikes can reach a top speed of up to 50-80 mph depending on how the engine is tuned
  • 110cc dirt bikes travel up to 50-55 mph
  • 125cc engine capacity bikes can reach a top speed of 55-60 mph and faster with a heavy rider on downhill roads
  • 125cc 4-stroke some bikes can top out at 35 mph while others can reach 55 mph depending on the specifications
  • 150cc bikes have an average speed of 50-60 mph with the possibility for more from an experienced rider
  • 200cc bikes run as fast as 60 mph and provide efficiency and power to compete in racing competitions
  • 250cc will vary based on the engine type but will be fast at 70-80 mph
  • 400cc have an average top speed of 87 mph with a significant speed gap between different models
  • 450cc dirt bikes will go up to 90 mph depending on modifications, rider weight, engine stroke, and terrain

Although speed isn’t the most important component of motocross riding, it’s useful to know some basic averages. Just remember it’s not the size of the bike that counts but how you ride it.
